GBHS girls football tournament

After some solid fund-raising, wonderful sponsorship and quality coaching, the first eleven girl’s football team was finally on the road to Wellington. We left sunny Golden Bay, whizzed across the Cook Strait on the ferry and arrived in windy Wellington.
Our first game was against Chilton St James. Battling first-time nerves, we drew 2- 2, a great result.
Our next game against Heretaunga was a tough one. We lost 3-0 but our defence played an awesome game and managed to keep the score in check. We had much to talk about in our nightly debrief and the loss ensured that we moved forward as a team with some new tactical knowledge and defensive experience.
We desperately needed to win and we did in our very next game, 1-0 against Wellington High School. It was well-earned and a great boost to our confidence. We celebrated that night with fish and chips.
Our last game was against St Oran’s College. It was a tough match but we came out on top with a 2-1 win and played some really good  attacking football.
Our team was only formed early this year and many of us  have never played before. We were motivated, mentored and coached by the wonderful Mrs Anderson. We all gained valuable experience and confidence and grew hugely as a team and as players. We couldn’t have hoped for a better coach or company. Thank you for the huge amount of effort and skill you put in.
A huge thank you to Marian Milne and Jeanine Taylor who helped us navigate the streets of Wellington. Also we’d like to thank the Golden Bay community for supporting our fund-raising especially Bill Richards, the Home and School  and Pub Charity. We couldn’t have done it without you.

Beyondsemble: “dazzling virtuosity”

Ever since its 2009 debut Beyondsemble, “the ensemble beyond genre” has excited audiences with its enormous vitality and range.
“I’ve played in numerous bands and dreamed about creating one band that could play it all,” says Beyondsemble’s Craig Denham. “This band can.”
All four members are multi-instrumentalists, able to perform in a range of musical styles merging Celtic, Eastern European and Gypsy with Latin and tango rhythms as well as improvising in jazz, swing and rock.
Besides seasoned professional Craig Denham (Mamaku Project, ex-Ardijah, Club Manouche) on accordion, keyboards, vocals and whistles, the band consists of Jess Hindin (The Exiles, Tim Beveridge, Boh Runga etc) on violin and keyboards, Chris Koole (The Warners) on vocals and home-made percussion, and rising acoustic guitar star Mark Mazengarb on guitars and bouzouki.
Beyondsemble provided the pre-show music for the 2010 World of Wearable Art awards in Wellington, and will launch its first studio album Beyondsemble on this tour with Arts On Tour NZ.
“...the show was nothing short of a pyrotechnic display of dazzling virtuosity by four highly imaginative and gifted musicians.” Mike Nettmann, About the Arts
The Mussel Inn is hosting Beyondsemble on Thursday 29 September, 8.30pm. $10 cover charge.

Reflective Listening and EFT workshop

Anatori Retreat owner and wellness advocate Michele Hart will be running another workshop later this month at the Golden Bay Community Centre, this time combining Reflective Listening with Gaining Confidence using the Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT).
“I’ll be explaining how reflective listening works and why it is so important. Like what do you say when a friend comes to visit and tells you she’s struggling with her relationship? Your reply in those first few moments can make her feel understood, and that you’re really there for her. But it could also make her feel worse, intensifying her emotional distress.”
The second part of the workshop deals with the EFT, which Michele describes as a quick, simple and non-invasive way to increase your enjoyment of life in every area.
“It’s not a therapy, rather a simple set of techniques you can learn to make your emotions work for you rather than against you. Emotions are energy in motion. When we are happy we generate more energy. Traumas often leave behind an energetic pattern that gets triggered by our thoughts, events, even other people’s emotive responses years later. Athletes apply this in reverse, using ‘trigger words’ to inspire their best performance.”
Described by some proponents as “energy psychology”, EFT utilises the tapping of acupuncture points...continued on page 2

...while a client focuses on a specific issue. The technique was developed by Gary Craig, an NLP practitioner. Michele trained in EFT in both New Zealand and Australia with Rehana Webster, known for her groundbreaking work in prisons here.
The workshops will be held on 26 September at the Community Centre, from 9.30am to 12.30pm, and repeated from 7.30pm to 9.30pm. Individual appointments are available in the afternoon. Participants are requested to make a donation towards hall hire and materials, to bring a pen and paper, and to leave a message of attendance at 03 524 8044, text 027 261 3843, or email < HYPERLINK “mailto:michele.hart@farmside.co.nz” michele.hart@farmside.co.nz>.

Former GB Pharmacy owner cops flak over account refunds

Several Golden Bay Pharmacy customers are seeking the return of the money they deposited into credit accounts held at the pharmacy by its former owner, Gilda McCourtie.
Gilda introduced credit accounts so customers could pay in advance for prescriptions and freight before scripts were sent out by mail car. She is now under fire from residents who say she didn’t refund their money when she sold the business to the pharmacy’s current owners.
Pharmacy staff are directing customers to Rachel Clarke of Paturau, who is acting as the contact for the group who are allegedly owed amounts ranging from a few dollars to up to $200.
“I believe there could have been up to 200 Golden Bay people out there who were owed money by way of these credit accounts. A few people who approached her personally got paid, while a lot of people who were owed small amounts have probably written them off, but I suspect there’s still quite a few owed quite a bit of money. That’s why I’d like to know of anyone who is owed prescription money, so we can proceed with all the facts exactly,” said Rachel.
Gwen Walker, 81, of Tukurua, had $120.19 in her credit account at Golden Bay Pharmacy, enough to pay for a month’s non-Pharmac prescription medicines for her husband Brian.
“When I went into the pharmacy after it changed hands I was told that I’d have to pay again because the credit accounts only applied to the previous owner,” said Gwen. “They gave me a name and address in Auckland so I wrote a letter and haven’t had any reply.”
Gilda McCourtie was 30 and not long out of Pharmacy College when she bought the Golden Bay Pharmacy in March 2009 from long-time business partners Paul and Shirley Marcussen, and Woulter and Wendy de Maat. Gilda sold it again at the end of January 2011 to Motueka Unichem pharmacist Dave Ross, the current owner. He said that when he took over the business he was amazed that it had 800 to 900 accounts on its database - anyone who had ever booked up any item and had it sent to them.
“In Motueka we run about 50 accounts like that at most at our pharmacy. I guess in Golden Bay it’s about distance out and a more established tradition of getting medicines sent out.”
Under the new management, Golden Bay Pharmacy no longer requires a prepaid prescription account before sending medicines out.
The GB Weekly contacted Gilda McCourtie in Auckland (where she owns an urgent pharmacy) for comment, and part of her statement she sent back through her solicitor states: “Vnite Pharmacy Limited (trading as Golden Bay Pharmacy) sold the assets of the Golden Bay Pharmacy business to Golden Bay Pharmacy (2010) Limited on 24 January 2011. Vnite Pharmacy Limited was not aware of any account holder who remains out of pocket, although your email suggests that there might be some. If that is the case, and those account holders can demonstrate that they have not received payment reimbursing them for the credit balance of their account with Vnite Pharmacy Limited as at 24 January 2011, then they are welcome to make contact with me by email.”
