Integrated family health centre update
The Interim Management Group met on Monday this week and continued project planning for the Golden Bay integrated family health centre.
There are no planned changes to the building – rest home facilities will remain an integral part of the project.
We are assembling the necessary information to apply for a resource consent from Tasman District Council
Once that information is ready we will hold an Open Day. We are planning a model of the building layout and some sketches so people can get a good understanding of what the building will be like.
We’re continuing to work on financial arrangements including both fund raising and mortgage financing.
The PHO is progressing the recruitment of a service director to run the Golden Bay health services at the new facility and will soon be interviewing those on the short list. All candidates have a strong health background.

TDC community awards recognise Bay’s volunteers
Three stalwarts of the Golden Bay community were recognised at the recent 2011 Tasman District Council Outstanding Community Service Awards ceremony. Murray Rogers, Peter Woods and Beverley Jensen joined eight other award recipients at a mayoral presentation on 12 August.
Mayor Richard Kempthorne said the awards were aimed at “recognising the host of people throughout our District who work away quietly without pay and with precious little recognition to make our communities better places to live. Our communities simply couldn’t function without the work of volunteers like these,” he said.
Nominees must be residents of the Tasman District and have been involved in a range of voluntary activities that have benefited their communities for 20 years or more.
Murray Rogers has completed over 20 years on the committee of H.A.N.D.S., Golden Bay’s local employment and trading system. Murray ran the growing system almost on his own for many years until several others joined with him to form a proper committee again in 2003. Murray still devotes many hours to the system. He was also founding member of the Golden Bay Organic Employment & Education Trust which opened a not-for-profit organic food shop in 1999. He served for many years as a trustee of Te Wharerangi Trust which administers the Golden Bay Community Gardens. For several years Murray has also been a member of the committee and an active volunteer of the Golden Bay Athletics Club. He is sharing with others his love for words by helping organise the annual week-long Word Fest programme in Golden Bay and offering children free weekly word fun sessions at the Community Centre.
Beverley Jensen came to live in Golden Bay around 1984 and took over as principal of Golden Bay High School. A few years later she was elected on to the Parapara Water Scheme of which she is presently the chairperson and has completed over 21 years on the committee. A year or so later she took over as chair of the Abbeyfield Committee and has now completed 20 years on that board. It took 15 years to raise the funding for the Abbeyfield project and Bev was the driving force behind it. She is now treasurer. Bev was also the treasurer for the St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church for eight or nine years.
Peter Woods has worked tirelessly for the Golden Bay community for the last 50 years doing the following community services:Takaka Citizens Band (10 years), Jaycee (10 years), Pohara Boat Club (25 years), Catholic Cemetery Committee (5 years), Collectable Cars (10 years, 3 as president), Takaka Bowling (15 years, 3 years as president), Wrinkly Express volunteer driver (2 years), volunteer bus driver for Collingwood and Takaka Rugby Clubs.
